Managing search fields

Search fields are the individual pieces of data that you may want to display in Searching when search results or detailed information about an item are displayed, or as facets, or as part of a Discovery source site. For each search field, you can specify how you want the search field to be used within Portfolio, the type of data to expect in the search field, whether it is a parent or child field, how the data in the search field should be normalized, and what behavior you want the search field to exhibit when you display the search field value.

Additionally, you can specify a default MARC Map for each search field. If you are using search fields with PDF documents, you can also specify any PDF field properties. By default, Portfolio delivers many of the search fields already pre-configured.

If you add or edit a search field, or if you edit the MARC Map properties for a search field, you must re-index your data and refresh the Discovery search cache. Your changes are not reflected in Searching or the Admin console until you refresh the search cache. For more information about refreshing the Discovery search cache, see Refreshing the search cache.

You cannot delete any of the default Portfolio search fields; only the search fields that you create.
