Changing the custom page elements for a search profile

You can customize the way that Searching appears to users by defining the page elements for a specific profile. You can define page elements that affect the entire page or specific areas of the Searching interface. Page elements that affect the entire page include themes, cascading stylesheets, or language-specific settings.

You can choose to specify different page elements for specific languages. You can also autofill the custom page elements fields with values saved for another language. For example, if you define the custom page elements for “English” and you want to apply those custom page elements to other languages, you can autofill the custom page elements fields with the values from the English language profile.

You can also specify a theme for the search profile. By default, the software includes pre-configured themes, but you can also add new themes or modify and delete existing themes. For more information, see Themes. You can also specify a custom cascading stylesheet.

If you have existing image files, style sheets, or content files you want to use to customize Searching for one or more profiles, you can upload the files to the Portfolio server (see Fields: Configure Custom Page Elements). These files can then be specified in the page element fields. The uploaded files remain on the Portfolio server until they are deleted, and are available to customize Searching for search profiles.

The Discovery administrator database metadata is cached in the Discovery Server application. When you make any change to the custom elements for a search profile, the changes will not be reflected to the patron in Searching until the metadata cache is refreshed. For more information, see Refreshing the search cache.

If another administrative user deletes or edits a search profile while you are configuring custom page elements for that profile, the software displays an error message indicating that the record has been updated or deleted by another user, and prevents you from saving any changes that you may have made to the profile. To continue making changes to this search profile, choose Cancel to reload the data and, if the profile is still available, re-enter your changes.

In order to improve the performance of page loads, Portfolio sets the expiration dates of graphics, scripts, style sheets, and Flash components to expire at a far-future date. Because of that, Portfolio instructs the browser to use cached versions of these files instead of reloading them from the server. Therefore, when you add a new custom file to a page, name the file a unique name (such as a versioned file name), instead of an existing name. The consequence of using an existing name is that Portfolio will load the cached title other than the new file until the patron refreshes the browser cache.

If you want to configure the display of the profile's banner, footer, and Home page content, you can do that through the profile Previewer. For more information, see Previewing a search profile.
